“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 KJV
I love this! Faith is the substance…of things hoped for. Often when we talk about the wonderful things that God can and will do in people’s lives, you will hear them say, “Well, I just don’t want to get my hopes up.” What they are really saying is that they don’t want their hopes to be dashed into a million pieces! But if you don’t ever set your HOPE on something, then you will never be able to operate by faith; and the bible says that without faith it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God.
The last part of this verse says that it is the evidence of things not seen. There is a saying that, seeing is believing, and that is the way most people operate, They won’t believe something unless they can see it first; but faith is completely opposite. Faith says, believing is seeing! So to operate by faith you must believe something before you will ever see it come to pass.
Faith in it’s simplest form is trusting God more than you trust in what you see or feel with your natural senses. And to trust God, you have to get to know Him. It is hard to trust someone that you don’t know, because you never know what they will do in certain circumstances. Once when my pastor/dad was preaching a sermon he called me to the front of the church for a demonstration. He blindfolded me and then turned me to face the congregation. He told me that he had placed a chair right behind me, and to sit down in the chair. I did not hear him put a chair back there and I couldn’t see if it was back there; but without hesitation I just plopped down! I KNEW that a chair would be there! How? Because I knew my Dad, and I knew that I could trust him. He was not someone who had played tricks on me or lied to me growing up. If he said that a chair was right behind me, then I believed him! If he had called someone new to the church to come up there, they probably wouldn’t have been so quick to sit down. Why? Because they wouldn’t have known him as well as I did. You can get to know God like that….He says, “Come, and learn of me”…..
I also hear people say that they just don’t have any faith….well, that is not true. God says that He has given to every man THE measure of faith. We all get the same amount. But what you do with it determines your outcome. Faith is developed in the same way that we develop our bodies and minds….you have to feed it and exercise it. You feed your faith on God’s Word and you exercise it by putting what you learn into practice. So make it a point to start spending more time in your bible; find out what it has to say to you; and then do what it says!
